About the Tan American Historical Association
In 1999, Dr. Guadalupe Vanderhorst Rodriguez, while driving on Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh, New York, felt a profound question stir within her: “What happened to the families of color in Clinton County?”

That question began a journey of discovery. She visited the Plattsburgh Public Library, pouring over old newspapers and articles. She searched Clinton County Census records, explored cemeteries across the region, and examined deeds, marriage, and death records at the Clinton County Clerk’s Office. Along the way, she was encouraged by researchers Tom Perrin and Sandra Sunderland, who recognized the importance of preserving this history.

In 2009, after years of research, Dr. Rodriguez published “Tan Americans of Clinton County, New York.” This groundbreaking work documented families of color whose stories had often been overlooked. Many descendants contributed their family histories and photographs, ensuring that their heritage would not be forgotten.

In 2017, the television program “Who Do You Think You Are” featured Dr. Rodriguez’s research while tracing the genealogy of musician Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. This moment brought national attention to the book and confirmed its value to genealogy and historical research.

Since its publication, Tan Americans of Clinton County, New York has inspired countless families to explore their ancestry. The Tan American Historical Association continues this mission—preserving records, sharing oral histories, and offering resources to help descendants connect with their past.

Our goal is simple: to honor the lives of Tan American and Indigenous families and keep their stories alive for future generations.
